How to Use Slack

Steps:

  1. Download both Desktop and Mobile Apps: https://slack.com/downloads
  2. Join relevant #channels: Click ‘Channels’ in the right sidebar or click here to see all channels in our workspace.
  3. Post to channels or send private messages - new posts in a thread will embolden the channel name. Direct messages for you will be indicated by a red dot to the right of the channel name. 
  4. Notify a member using @[Name], or all channel members using @everyone or @here[NOTE: USE THIS SPARINGLY AS IT NOTIFIES EVERYBODY]

Tips:

  • You can edit sent messages post-facto via the dropdown menu on the right, that appears when you hover over a message. 
  • The emoji and reply icons let you respond directly to a post or create a thread:

  • 🌟 Star a message to add it to your personal ‘to do’ list. 
    • Desktop/browser: Click the 🌟star icon in the top right to view all your Starred Items.
    • iOS: Swipe left to open the right sidebar. Tap Starred Items.
    • Android: Swipe right to open the left sidebar. Tap ▼ in top-left to open the menu drawer. Tap Starred Items.
  • Create a poll in Slack: Just type/polland follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Set reminders (for yourself, others, or an entire channel) using/remind
  • Share filesin a channel by clicking the + icon found on the left side of your message box or dragging and dropping files directly into a channel.
  • Find all files shared in a channel by clicking the 3-dot icon in the top right -> Files 
  • Conduct a quick search straight from your message window by typing the keyboard shortcut slash s command followed by what you’re looking for. Example: /s annual summit notes.

Messaging:

Type /message to compose and schedule a message to an individual or channel.

Channel Guide:

  • #general - This channel is for workspace-wide communication and announcements. All members are in this channel. 
  • #peopleops - This channel is for HR-specific announcements and updates. All members are in this channel. 
  • #bayarea - For discussing outreach and strategy for community testing in the Bay Area
  • #boundaries - Personal Needs and Expectations 
  • #brandingandmarketing
  • #chori - discussions related to our Oakland lab
  • #compliance - Shared info and planning for changing compliance environment
  • #customerservice - Discussions and updates on customer service tools and processes, eventually this channel will likely be integrated with whatever LiveChat support feature we set up.
  • #ecosystem - Discussion about competitors and collaborators.
  • #financetransparency 
  • #fundraising - all things fundraising
  • #lab-notebook - experimental protocols and data 
  • #laboperations 
  • #leads - private channel for Team Leads
  • #legal - For discussions having to do with legal issues, state/corporate documents, etc;
  • #logistics - Organize sample flow and experience journey (online/offline) 
  • #news - relevant news articles 
  • #newyork - NYC operations
  • #pickuprequests - Add your sample pick up request here for Sanee to coordinate 
  • #random - A place for non-work-related flimflam, faffing, hodge-podge or jibber-jabber you'd prefer to keep out of more focused work-related channels. 
  • #renegade-ligolab - Collaboration on the deployment of the LigoLab LIS software
  • #renegade-nygc - This is a shared channel with the team at NY Genome Center
  • #renegade-primary - This is a shared channel with the Primary team
  • #sales - Customer discovery, acquisition and completion
  • #socialmedia - Post photos, news articles, online mentions etc here for the marketing team to post to our social media channels.
  • #testinggoals - Our weekly testing goals
  • #theyro-of-the-day - This is for champions of the day - people who have gone above and beyond in helping this company get off the ground. Nominate anyone, celebrate EVERYONE!
  • #videocollab - Shareable channel for real-time comms re: video production work
  • #website - For coordinating updates to and reporting issues with the website.
  • #workorders - Preparations for Work coming into the lab
